The Dirty Secret of Off-the-Shelf Golf Clubs
The golf clubs you bought in a shop – even good ones from a reputable brand – were built to fit an average golfer. An average height, average swing speed, average attack angle, average tempo. If your game matches that average profile, you’re fine.
Most golfers don’t.
The wrong shaft flex, incorrect lie angle, or poorly matched loft can make technically good swings produce poor results – and no amount of practice will fully compensate. This is what custom club fitting is designed to solve.
What a Fitting at Sigmoid Golf Involves
All custom fittings at Sigmoid Golf take place at our Sandyford HQ, using TrackMan to capture your ball flight and swing data in real time. The fitting is conducted by the esteemed PGA Professional and former Club Fitter of the Year, Michael Kavanagh and typically covers:
Shaft fitting: Matching shaft flex, weight, and profile to your swing speed and tempo. This is often the single most impactful change a golfer can make to their equipment.
Loft and lie angle: Ensuring the club is sitting correctly at address and that the loft is producing optimal launch for your swing. Even a degree or two of incorrect lie angle causes significant lateral dispersion.
Head design and forgiveness profile: Matching the level of forgiveness in the head to the consistency of your strike pattern.
Grip size: Often overlooked, but grip size directly affects how active the hands are through impact. Too thick and the hands slow down. Too thin and they become overactive.
What Trackman Adds to the Fitting Process
The difference between a Trackman club fitting and a basic fitting is the quality of data available to your fitter. Without launch monitor data, a fitter is largely relying on visual feedback and your description of ball flight. With Trackman, every test shaft or head is compared on objective metrics: ball speed, smash factor, launch angle, spin, and carry distance.
This means decisions are based on evidence, not opinion. When we recommend a shaft, it’s because the numbers show it outperforms your current equipment for your specific swing – not because it’s popular or on promotion.
Who Should Get Fitted?
The honest answer: anyone who plays regularly. The common misconception about golf club fitting is that it’s only for good players. In reality, mid to high handicappers often benefit most – because their equipment is most likely to be working against them.
If you’ve been playing for more than a year with the same clubs and feel like your improvement has plateaued, a fitting is the most direct way to identify whether equipment is a factor.
